Please read all the information on opening the PhD procedure at the FGW carefully.
Please use the following templates for your dissertation:
Once you have completed your dissertation, consult with your primary supervisor and submit an application to the FGW to initiate the PhD procedure. This involves filling out an online form (see link below).
In addition to information about your work, you will need a proposal for the doctoral committee to complete the form. Please discuss possible members with your primary supervisor in advance. We have summarized the requirements for the composition of the committee in the guidelines. We need the names and contact details (e-mail) of all committee members so that we can inform them about all necessary tasks and steps.
You can submit your application to start your PhD here:

Once you have completed and submitted the form, you will receive an e-mail with the completed application as a PDF file. Please print out the application, sign it, and send it to us by email together with all other documents.
Please submit all other documents listed in our checklist digitally by e-mail, together with the signed application form. The PhD Office will then check your documents and ask you to submit the documents in paper form (certified if necessary) to the office.
We can provide you with a letter for the application for an extended certificate of good conduct. The extended certificate of good conduct can be submitted later if the documents are otherwise complete.
After you have submitted your documents to open your doctoral procedure at the FGW, your digital thesis will be checked by the PhD office using the plagiarism software Turnitin, and we will then give you the opportunity to comment. Due to technical reasons, we must ask you not to check your thesis yourself with Turnitin beforehand.
Your documents will then be submitted to the PhD committee. The committee will review your application and, if approved, issue a recommendation for approval to the faculty council. The faculty council will also select the members of the doctoral commission and the persons responsible for reviewing your application.
Based on the reviews, the doctoral commission will determine a preliminary grade and set a date for your oral defense together with you. After a two-week period during which your dissertation is available for inspection at the doctoral office, your public oral defense will take place.
Please note: The PhD office must send out invitations to the oral defense two weeks in advance. Please send us your invitation based on this template in good time.
The doctoral committee determines the overall result of your work based on the results of your dissertation and defense. You will be informed of the result immediately after the defense, which is closed to the public.
If you have any questions about the procedure, please feel free to contact the faculty’s doctoral office.
