Profile Area 1

Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation

This field comprises a translational approach, from applied basic research to conducting clinical studies. The focus is on the following diseases, which are particularly relevant to an ageing population:

  • Cardiovascular diseases (including heart failure)
  • Musculoskeletal diseases (including backache and arthritis)
  • Neurodegenerative diseases (including dementia)
  • Metabolic and lifestyle-related diseases (including obesity, diabetes and their secondary diseases)

The main focus of this profile area is the scientific justification and validation of mechanisms, with the help of which preventive strategies can be implemented, treatment optimised and the focus can be on rehabilitation. Since older people frequently suffer from more than one disease, interactions with primary and secondary prevention should be examined scientifically.
